Default transmission swap?

ok so i purchased an achieva with the w41 and a 5 speed. the engine is toast but the transmission is good. it has the 282 getrag in it. you guys were saying the 284 would bolt up to the 3.1... so i was wondering if the 282 would boltup to the 3.1 engine. i am willing to do all the fab work i just would like to know if it willl bolt up to the engine. im on my second auto in my car and its on its last leg. if anyone has some info it would be great!

thanks for the info! cause i would have hated to get both of them torn apart ust to see that it wont work. well when i get another car to mob around for a little while ill break her down and get to work. my transmissions pushin 270000 and doesnt have od and slips like hell so it might not be too long. when i go to do it i will note things and take pictures! cause this seems like a task that most people are scared to get into

I think the problem is with the lack of transmission choices, it really isnt worth the work for the everyday modder to do, thats why you dont see too many people doing it. Think about it, you have 3 manual transmissions that will bolt to our engines. The 282, the 284 and the F40 6 speed. The 282 is the only transmission with any real parts availability and it really doesnt hold enough power to use reliably behind something that will make decent power. The 284 holds power well but they are rare and no one makes parts for them anymore so you are screwed if you break it. The F40 is rare too and Im not sure if anyone makes parts for it either.

You're up for weeks of weekend work if you want to go do all of that. i'm in the process of putting an automatic 390 back into a car that someone had stolen it out of.. I've got a trucks transmission and an engine from a galaxy, and I have had to fabricate so much stuff it isn't funny... shift rods, linkages, I've had to freaking modify washers and bushings!!! This is stuff that should just "bolt right up!!" And you're looking at putting a clutch in? That's going ot be a cross member welded or bolted under the dash to hold a clutch... maybe there's another method that I'm not thinking about...

If it were me and I wanted a manual transmission, or anything, I'd eitehr put another auto in this car and let it go until it burns or get a car that comes with a more reliable transmission. But that's just me. It's all about you and waht you want, bud!

I believe you need a brake/clutch pedal bracket from a manual lumina/grand prix to use a clutch pedal in our cars.

yeah i see what you mean about the rareness of the trannys. i ust happend to stumble across this car, and i have clutch and brke pedals pluss all the mounts that are on that car to modify them to my car. the car is a complete donor. im about ready to blow my second automatic tranny thats been in my car and it only has 105000 on the car and i have only put about 23000 miles on the car since i have owned it. i would like more power but for now this will work because these auto transmissions ust arent seeming to do the trick for me. and i figure that everything thats in the achieva should be able to fit with some fab. if i didnt have the other car as a donor i could see it being a royal pain!
