This is a common problem with these cars. The transmission is a very weak link. Mine was shifting hard and it ended up being the valve body in the transmission. granted it was my 2003 monte the transmissions are pretty much the same. It started doing it right after I had a transmission service. But without a detailed description we can only guess what might be the problem here.

Lucas...
How many miles is on the vehicle?

Generally, Its either a faulty shift solenoid....or that these transmissions around 80k to 120k start showing signs of wear and tear.. Its more than likely its time for a rebuild... How did the old fluid look? I'm sure it was all brown and burnt.... Was there a lot of residual grit in the bottom of the pan?

I am at 122k miles, I guess it's soon to be time for a rebuild? Fluid was indeed black and burnt and there was a bit of metal "dust" stuck to the magnet on pan

You could drop the pan and change the solenoid yourself.... and hope that fixes the shift issue...But IMO I think it would be more of a waste of time and money....

You could either get a used trans (Not what I would do) Or go to your local trans shop (That you trust) and explain to them you want a "soft" rebuild...

That can be done for right around $800.00 to $1000.00 depending on the shop.

Well I have enough mechanical experience to do a rebuild myself I just don't want to take the time, as I don't have any with work and school.
It's not that terribly bad yet, the shift is not that hard but I can feel it..
How long do you think I can keep going like this?
