I did my TB de-carbon cleaning effort late summer last year and pretty well had the whole thing drainined then. Replacing transmission cooler lines doesn't impact the actual coolant, correct? They're both separately closed systems?

I'm not 100% on the transmission cooling lines. Hopefully someone else knows?

The tranny cooler lines go to the radiator, but only have tranny fluid in them

Unless there's a leak or break somewhere

Chibi and I agree with you Nitehawk on the tranny lines only having tranny fluid in them. My question was how much fluid those lines (and the tranny fluid cavities inside the radiator) hold? I’ll be doing a pan drop and changing my leaky hoses. I’ve read I need 7 to 8 qts of fluid after the pan drop, but I wasn’t sure how much more I’ll need since I’m “losing” what’s in the lines and in the tranny fluid portion of the radiator.

with mine with the high end trans cooler with external filter it takes about 7 at least pooshing it. but i am a stickeler on start it in the morning and let it sit all day to let it drip from the lines to trans.when i change the filter on the trans cooler it takes about a quart. then i fill it back up. i usually let it drain for majority of the day as in start at 8 in the morning and let it sit till 4 in the evning

There wasn't a whole lot left in the tranny lines once they were removed. My fluid was definitely dark and had a slightly burnt smell to it. I got the filter changed and buttoned it back up. I added some Lucas tranny fixer stuff....whatever it's called.

I'm irritated because I ended up buying new fittings for the lines and my GM parts guy gave me the wrong ones. They were changed in Feb 2004 and mine was made within a week of the swap....evidently he thought I was on the wrong side of the parts change.

Anyway, I took it out today and it seemed to be doing better. We'll see how it is in a couple weeks.

If the fluid smelled burned you might be too late.

But I hope the best for you!
