Default Transmission Help!

Just picked up a 78, it's got a built 350, 350 tranny, and 3.73 gears. I'm not a mechanic, and I don't consider myself highly educated about the workings of an automobile. I'm curious if the redline for all 350 trannys is the same. I've found a mph/ratio calculator online and am trying to figure it out. If anyone knows what the redline (Shift rpm) is, or what is common, etc. it'd be appreciated. Also, if someone could explain a stall converter to me, I know it's for launching the vehicle mostly, but I'm not sure how it plays into the tranmission the rest of the time, and if it effects overall mph per gear and what not, any information would be useful as I'm trying to become more educated!

First, if you not drag racing, do a burn out or stump on the gas every time, don't worry about the TH-350 trans. They are plenty strong. As for the trans, performance trans have different torque converter, valvebody caliberation and governer for shift point. Redline is more for engine, rather than trans.

If you're first timer on rear-wheel drive, or not familiar with stall speed, or any of the technical term, don't rush. Last thing you want to do is get a wrong stall-speed converter and soggy take-off. Besides, stall-speed has lot to do with your rear gearing, cam selection and compression ratio (and much more) on the engine.
