Default Rev Limiter/Fuel Cutoff

I was revving the motor of my 99 Z34 in the driveway the other night and found that the engine will cut out at 4,000 rpm. (In park/neutral - not drive). Apparently the engineers installed a fuel cutoff or rev limiter to protect the engine from people like me.

I'll never forget the first time I found the a rev limiter on my 1990 Beretta GTZ. That car had a DOHC engine that redlined at somewhere around 6,500. Well the first time I hit the limiter (and not knowing the car had one), I thought I killed the motor. That thing was still pulling hard too. The GTZ was way ahead of it's time.

You might want to stop doing that...

Yea, they have rev limiters in park/ neutral, as well as a rev limiter in drive. Like you said, they will only rev to 4,000 RPM in park, and then they set the rev limiter in drive at redline.

You can change it with pcm tuning. I've always thought it would be funny to set someone's drive limiter to like 2500

hey, if they set it to 4000 in park/neutral, why can it go higher in drive?? could it be because it has something to do with the trans holding back or something?? ive never understood that??

The computer knows what gear you are in, so the computer doesn't allow the revs to get higher in those gears.

Because in park you are free reving your engine. Its different reving your engine with a load on it.
