Rear Main Seal
#11
My best friend had a 267ci in his '82 firebird, which was out of a monte carlo I'm assuming. Anyways, his rear seal went and he had to pull the engine to replace it. As someone else said, $20 part, hours upon hours of labour.

R&R Rear Main Seal Small Block Chevy In Vehicle
So I have the two piece small block chevy rear main seal, that I am trying to change while it is in the vehicle; I have the pan off, oil pump off, rear main bearing cap off, and for the life of me I cannot get the upper half of the rear main seal out... (engine block side).
I have tried a punch/screwdriver and no luck it will not budge, all that appears to be happening is the side I am hitting on is crumbling...
suggestions?
thanks in advance.

ended up buying a 3ft piece of brass round stock 1/8" in diameter which was as close as I could get based on mating side in rear main bearing housing I already removed 3/16" was too big & anything smaller than 1/8" was too flimsy. I also found that W/D 40 made the petrified seal a little bit more pliable. The 1/8" homemade drift cut to 14" gave me room to hit it & wrap around crank It was slow going, I won.
Major PITA, still better than dropping crank and tranny, and giving my kids college tuition to some mechanic.
BTW: Ace Hardware 6 bucks for the 1/8"x3' brass round stock.
