Rear main seal leak

Default Rear main seal leak

I have a 2003 monte carlo 124,000 miles had oil leaks fixed but said still may have a rear main seal leak has anyone had that and is it common for these cars and about how much would a repair like cost?

I've heard of it happening. They suck to change as you need to seperate the trans from engine to gain access to the rear cover.

What trim package/ engine do you have? LS or SS? I think this is a fairly common problem with SS's (3800 series II engine) and I agree with Turbo, it sucks! My '00 SS has leaked slowly for a few years now. It also has about 124,000 miles. Unless it gets really bad I'll wait for the tranny to go out before addressing since the tranny and flywheel need to come out to get to the seal. A shop in my area would likely charge $800-$1200. That can buy a lot of kitty litter for the cost of the repair. I had the tranny flushed a few years ago and replaced with Mobile 1 synthetic ATF. So far no signs of tranny probs. so it might be awhile before the seal gets replaced.

I didn't realize you didn't specify engine size. My earlier comment is geared toward the 3800 engine. I know nothing about the 3400 engine.
