Default rear main seal

So, much to my dismay, I have developed a nasty oil leak on my 98 monte. I took it back to meineke because i thought theymessed something up when changing the oil last time, but turns out my rear main seal is leaking. I talked to a couple of places and they want to charge about $1,200 to fix it. Is this normal or are they trying to screw me? Any advice or opinions would be appreciated.

Default RE: rear main seal

the good news is they are not terminal for the car.
the bad news is they are nto a easy task on most cars you are forced to rais the motor up so you cna get the oil pan completly apart. but this is in a standard V-8 type set up not the FRW.

I would see if you cnat find destructions on line about how to do it and see what it takes to do it. Most of the time they are billing you on a hours book. so you should be abel to call around or to even a dealer and find out what the hours are on it. go from there
