Default Questions about the computer and carb/distributor in 1984 monte carlo

The computer in my 1984 Monte Carlo isnt connected and i had a guy look at it and said that i could pay a good amount of money to fix it/turn it back on, and my uncle told me i could get a carburetor and distributor and i could have the computer ripped out, and i havent heard **** from my uncle or the mechanic in a bit and the original carb is really acting up now, anybody know which carb i can get and distributor which could eliminate the computer.

you want a non computer controlled vacuum advance distributor. idk if the carbs are different between the years but i believe that gm always ran q jets on there cars. at least in the 70s and 80s they did. distributor is pretty cheap and easy to find in the junkyard.

this might be the time to invest a little bit of cash. id get a 600 or 650cfm vacuum secondary carb and an edelbrock performer intake. you can find them on ebay for cheap.

yeah you can run that stuff. you might want to check out ebay though. oh and thats a really good distributor. you could get cheaper ones like the summit one or go to a junk yard and pull one and buy a cap and rotor for it. link below is just an example. you can save yourself a few bucks if you shop around a little bit. maybe craigs list. i personally have no experience with the edelbrock carbs, even though i just got rid of one. my buddy had nothing but trouble with his, but im sure there are people out there with nothing but good stuff to say about them.

i think it all depends. to my knowledge all of the qjets were rated at 700cfm or above. personally ive run a 600 vacuum secondary on a stock 400 and it ran like a champ. i went to a 650dbl pumper and had nothing but problems. once i rebuilt the motor i went with a 750dbl pumper and if you ask me the car is a little over carbd. it can be done but i would rather have a smaller carb. if you hunt around theres a formula that gives you the cfm that would be best for your application. then again you could always debate that theres no such thing as too much carb just not enough motor. id rather go small and mess around with jetting and squirters.
