Default help with '82 idle speed. 305 engine. computer carb?

okay i almost have the ol 82 running brand new if i can fix a few more things. first off, when i start the engine, it is unusually quiet(you kno, being a v-8 and all). its to the point that i can barely hear it. it also cuts off alot if i dont gas it right away. when i put it in reverse its like the engine gets so slow that the shift causes it to cut off. if i gas it though and stay on it, i can get it rolling pretty nice. once im on the road it runs like a gazelle. i can get a nice loud growl out of it and it pulls hills like a champ. but as soon as i hit the brakes it slows down like its ready to cut off again. and most the time i have to gas it just to make sure the engine is still on. thats how low it is. now i dont know if thats a carb problem or an ignition or electrical problem but to have it fixed would be nice. other than that there are not many problems with the car. ill post another thread in another forum breaking down all remaining issues seeking help from you guys. but for now this is the most pressing need. and as always, thanks in advance...monte82ppe

Vacuum leak? Did you try to see if any vacuum is leaking? Start from most obvious. BTW, to pin-point the problem, we need more info. What size engine? Are you on computer? Has anything been change from stock? What distributor Are you running? How about carb? aftermarket or stock? Just to name a few.

More info you give us, we can give you a possible cause.

I don't think the carb on an '82 is computer controlled. What rpm is the engine idling at? It may need the air/fuel mixture and/or the curb idle speed adjusted.
