Default Problem Changing Transmission Filter

I have a 97 monte carlo ls in the garage at the moment

Pulled the pan and filter, there were 2 clips holding it in and now im really not sure of how to get the new transmission filter to go in tight, also with my new filter it came with a seal for the top, now there is a big plastic o ring from what it looks like where the old filter came out and im unaware as to remove it or not, i figured it was the old one so i didnt want to remove it because it looked all in tact so i just took the new ring off the filter and placed it in, it kinda wiggled around a bit but it stayed in, so i put the pan back on filled her up started the car let it run for a bit go to put it in reverse, and i got nothing, drive.. nothing so its still up pans back off and here i am, asking for a little bit of knowledge..

So what i need to know are what are those little clips for that were underneath the old filter theres 2 rods that it connects between right by the entrance where i would put the new filter, and if i have to remove that old plug or not if not should i have to be pushing very hard to get that new filter in..

Thanks a lot

So the car is still sitting in my garage just waiting to be put back together, I called my mechanic yesterday because i was having no luck getting this filter on at all, he puts the new one in and it slides on slides off pretty easy just a little wiggling, puts the old one on, still not holding right but its tighter than the newer one. He then tells me that something isnt right either the o ring or the filter itself, to go get another filter and o ring and try to install it.. Not going to advanced auto anymore gonna try the auto zone today.

Could it possibly be that the o ring is not in fully, it looks like its sitting less than flush inside like there is a tiny little lip that might be causing the problem, any other ideas

If it dossn't match perfectly it could be the wrong one. Iv'e bought parts and had them be in the wrong box.

Its Finally fixed!

Took the old part back to advanced auto and went to auto zone and received a new tranny filter and o ring and gasket.

Pulled the old o ring out from advanced auto and i had to really force the new one in the hole (tapping with a rubber mallet and socket)
Put the new filter up and click, it went right in.
Bolted the pan back in added 3 quarts of fluid, and off the ramp it actually moved instead of pushing the gas and it just revving, i seriously wanted to dance, it was my first time ever doing any type of transmission work (as little as it was) so it made me happy that i saved money and did it myself.. Even though the new filter didn't help a lot of the problems that were happening but it solved some of the slipping with a little help from lucas.

Next thing is to get a new tranny for it

I think the whole problem was the o ring was to small because i could put it in there by hand compared to the new one i really had to put some effort in getting it in
