Question Please Read: car just broke down, need help/advise ?

Was driving along on a highway on cruise control doing 60mph, foot off the accelerator. When all of a sudden the RPM's spike, take cruise off and i press the gas and the rpms go back up and the car doesn't accelerate. So I pull over to the side of the road and put it in park and turn it off. I turn it back on and the car wont go into any gear, i check the transmission fluid and its fine. I recently replaced the transmission (<6 months ago) and had no warning signs at all that anything was amiss. when the tow truck got it home I had him lift the front end up and as far as i can see the undercarriage is pristine with no fluid anywhere to be seen. Any ideas as to whats happening with my car and why all of a sudden it wont drive?

Hi Nick,
Sorry to read about your mystery problem.
I've read a lot of post on transmission problems, but I have not
read one like yours. I hope that one of our expert member's
can assist and advise.

From your post description of what happens it seems that it is
in one of the electrical components (?), since your cruise
was on & your had a RPM `spike.

What modification have you done to your Monte ?
How many miles on your Monte ?
When you posted that it will start & run, but when you
put it into any gear that it does not engage ?
Is your repaired transmission still under a warranty ?

I hope one of our expert members can add some insight into your
problem...I will research my files later to see if I can find any
same or similar problems.

Wish you good luck & keep us updated.

i do have a couple of questions first when you had the trans put in did the shop put in a new torqu converter? second is the trans a rebuild or nos(new old stock) component if so there could be a problem with some of the silinoids that ingage the gears. third do you know if the tcm (transmission controll module) has been reset and identified to the sensors on the trans. fourth is do you know if the sensors are new or did they reuse the ones off of the old trans if so you may have a sensor problem and the tcm (trans controll module) is throwing a keep safe loop to prevent damage to the gears.

Monte Carlo SS Transmission Questions

By Richard Rowe, eHow Contributor
updated: October 19, 2009

The 2001 Monte Carlo uses an upgraded version of the previous generation's trans-axle (transmission and axle in one, used in front-wheel-drive applications), called the 4T65-E. It is a four speed, automatic overdrive transaxle, used in all GM passenger cars with the corporate 3800 series engine. As denoted by the "E" suffix, this transmission is fully electronic, requiring a stand-alone computer to regulate its shift points and firmness.

  1. What are the Origins?

  1. The first automatic overdrive transaxle used in GM passenger cars was the Turbo-hydramatic 125 (later called the 440-T4), used in the A/ X/ J/ W body cars produced from 1982-88. It's successor was the 4T60-E, used in every front-drive passenger car in the line available with the 3800 V6 until 1997, when it was replaced with the 4T65-E.

This newest generation of 4 speed auto trans-axles was essentially identical to its predecessor, but came with a larger 245mm torque converter, stronger input and output shafts to increase its torque capacity to handle vehicles of up to 6,500 lbs with 280 ft.lbs. of torque. What are the Gear Specifications?
  2. The 4T65-E's gear ratios are: 1st Gear - 2.92:1, 2nd Gear - 1.56:1, 3rd Gear 1:1, Overdrive - 0.70:1.Which Autos Used This Transmission?
  3. Generally speaking, this transaxle is used with 3000 series GM V6 engines, most commonly the 3800. It also comes in high-output cars with smaller displacement engines, or those which are especially heavy. The heavier duty versions of this tranny are used with Cadillac Northstar engines. The 2001 Monte Carlo's specific variant of this transmission is also used in the:

    1997 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.4L
1997-2003 Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Chevy Venture
1997-2001 Monte Carlo and Chevy Lumina 3.1L
1997-2002 Oldsmobile IntrigueWhat are Some Common Problems?
  4. Though a generally reliable drivetrain, this transmission does come with its share of problems. Time is this transmission's greatest enemy, as it was quietly created with "planned obsolescence" in mind. As such, you can't count on certain components not showing their age around the 60K mile mark on even the best kept car.

Modification is the second biggest tranny killer, as 4T65-Es are engineered to work within the constraints of the factory engine's powerband. As a result, increasing the engine's power past 350 horsepower (according to Triple Edge Performance) may result in any number of broken or worn components: neutral at drive (car won't move when put in drive from park) caused by a worn out input clutch piston inner surface; tach bouncing due to a worn out TCC piston (a component in the valve body); and no 4th gear/ 4th gear lock-up because the splines on hollow overdrive shaft are worn off.

...Thanks John, for your input & posts...Yes, I've been 4getting a lot lately...
I was hoping that more member's would be able to help Nicholas with his problem transmission, but the weekends are slow on the MCF. I'm hoping it just one of the sensor's that can be repaired inexpensely.....

Hopefully, one of our expert Tech Memeber's will know more about this type of problem with his transmission....and post...
