Default P1811 code, how long can i go?

So after noticing that my monte was starting to hard shift i took it into my local transmission shop and it was diagnosed with a P1811 code (lag shift) They said $300 to open it up and fix the major control soleniod then after it depends on what else is broken. Im figuring $1000+ but its gonna be a month or two before i have that much. Has anyone had this problem and how long have you driven on it? will it damage anything else in the engine? also if you have had it rebuilt what did it cost?
Thanks guys!

Have you had the cat checked? I had that code and I had a break in the flexpipe and the dude told me "oh btw your cat appears to be plugged". So I bought a flexpipe and cat all in one and voila' no more P1811 code. And this thing shifted hard I mean it would slam me into second gear sometimes. Might be worth getting checked to see if its possibly a plugged cat?
