is this over kill just want an opinion
ok i helped a friend out with his 3.5 tear down on the engine. he had a leaky head gasket do to his thermostat sticking shut. i wanted to ask he had the machine shop port and polish the heads and polish the intake manifold is that over kill? just to try to squeze out more horse power out of the 3500 motors. i never heared people doing that to v6 engins only v8 ones to squese out hp before throwing on a supercharger on a v8? is that normal or am i just in what the heck mode because i never seen that done to a v6. thanks for a reply please be sivel and i really dont like high rate people.

i've heard of getting huge gains from porting the LS4 intake and TB, as you would with pretty much any engine as stated above. therefore, you would probably get even better results porting the heads also, however i can't imagine it would have been cheap. i would recommend getting a tune for the engine to take full advantage of the porting and to get rid of any codes that may pop up (i've heard porting on the LS4s may or may not throw a code of some sort).
is it overkill? probably IMO, with the time/money they spent with all that porting and other mods, you would think you could get the Monte SS LS4 with the HD trans for close to the same price and probably still get more hp.
did he/she get any dyno numbers? keep us updated! not something i would ever to, but it would be cool to know.

IMO, it depends what kind of porting was really done. Especially when you're talking head porting, there are many different 'levels'. I think just a quickly clean up job to get rid of any casting marks would be a great idea- however if they were actually fully ported to increase flow- it would depend what lift they worked to increase flow at (if he got a full on port job like this, he should have before/after flowbench data at all the various lifts). Then it depends how much they improved the flow in the lift range that the stock cam operates at (ie if they ported the heads to increase flow at .650" lift, at the expense of low lift flow- and the stock cam peaks out at .500" lift, then he probably was hurt by the port job).

i dont know where is a dyno shop neer polk county florida is. but when he got the heads out of the shop they got a cam lifters for the rockers and the valves that they put in with new valve gide seals. i was happy to find out that the heads were fine as in still level on the mark it didnt need to be grinded do to warrping. because the heads never had the chance.porting and the valves and springs they put in are a supositly stiffer going to look them up have the make and part # wot-tec has simmular type in inventory i think not sure. but the cam has a bigger lift on them. cant wait till this weekend to put them on and start the car to see how it runs. the car has high flow cat and cai and full exaughst work but no headers yet. my friend wife said the work that i helped them with on tear down and going to the rebuild they are willing to get some thing for my monty. im thinking about those headers i mentioned on a nother post
