Default Oil monitering system doesn't work. Help

On my 2003 SS 3800, the oil monitering system doesn't seem to be working. The change oil message will never appear, even if I reset it after an oil change. It has been this way since I've owned the car, and I really can't afford to pay some GM mechanic big bucks to look at it. Can anyone help?

I'm going to jump on the "it's probably a good thing you are not seeing it" bandwagon.

I never trust the oil monitoring system. I prefer to get it done at regular intervals. Being in Canada, I change it every 5,000 kilometers.
