Default Oil Capacity

I have a 2005 MC LS 3400. Been a long time since ive changed my oil on it as my buddies shop did it for me.

Manual says 4.0qt including filter, but searching this forum some say 4.5 and others say 5.

What is the actual capacity of the oil

i believe it is 4.5, but putting in the whole 5 quart wont kill you... from my experience anyway

Drop the 4 in, and then keep adding until it's where it needs to be on the dipstick.

The manual dont explain where the full line is on the 3400 dipstick nor is it on the dipstick.

All i have are the crosshatch area with 4 holes. So should all 4 holds be covered in oil.

Yes all holes covered. Actually any are "safe" none is about a quart low. Never go over.

My Haynes manual says.....

The oil level should be at or near the upper hole in the cross-hatched area - if it's below the ADD line, add enough oil to bring the lever into the upper hole or top of the cross-hatched area...

also states 3.1L and 3.4 OHV 4.0 qts. to 5.0 qts.

What he said is best advice when unsure.

I have ran 4.5-5 quarts in my 3400s (the Impala and the Grand Am). No issues.

My old 3100 required 4.5, so I have honestly never checked our 3400s since they are based off that 3100 design (but the dip stick reads right each time).
