Fuel Tank Capacity

Fuel Tank Capacity
probably a dumb question but i went to go fill up my car since i was riding on E, most of the time i usually put 25 -30 bux in which gets me over half a tank but with the holiday weekend i figured i just fill it up till its full, so 45 bux later i have a full tank but im wondering why my car only took in about 12.8 gallons of gas when its rated to have 16.6 fuel tank capacity?

I think you have a good reserve
I think your gas gauge is as old as your Monte & may show empty, but still has about a 4 gallon of gas reserve (Maybe) For me, that would be a good thing...It's not good to run your Monte on Empty cause it will pick up debris that's in the bottom of your tank & could cause problems/clogged/fuel pump etc....

I know with the 6th gens, they're designed to have the fuel light come on when you still have 2-3 gallons left (enough for 50 miles or so). That's on the 17 gallon tank of course. And most gauges hit E when they still have at least a couple gallons left. My 4th gen Camaro was the same way.

There no light on 5th gens it just dies when it runs out of gas happened to me a few times tryin to pull a Kramer so i think i know when to hit that gas station when i've been sitting on that red line for awhile, thats why i found it odd today when i fillin it up that there such a difference in capacity. Unless the tanks are not as big as specs

Most cars are designed to have a reserve when you hit E.My girls durango has 8 gallons when the light comes on.Plus most fuel gauges/sending units don't read exact to start with my dakota has the same tank sending unit an gauge cluster as my girls durango when the light comes on in mine it only has 2-3 gallons left.

Mine only takes 13 gallons max if I run it right to empty. All gas tanks hold a reserve of fuel but I think the combination of that and our gauges being incredibly inaccurate accounts for the other 3+ gallons.

Wow!
I must be REALLY running mine to fumes then. I am regularly stuffing 14.8, 15.4 gal., etc. in it every time I fill-up. Though I have ALWAYS pushed the issue with fuel mileage.
Some times I have "won", other times, well, OK, many times I have not, ... I still have fun though ... I am just a "do not give a **** guy" ... when I am alone, that is ... (usually got a 'lil 1 gallon can-'o-fuel I made hidden in the spare tire compartment anyway ... Or roadside can bring me a few for free.) I've always got my tunes to bump for a bit ...
