Either Mobil 1 or Amsoil 5w or 10w 30 will work just fine. A high quality oil filter is a must. Amsoil Eao 23 or a mobil 1 type of filter.

I wouldn't recommend using lighter than 5w30 in a 3800 powered Monte- lighter oil does provide less protection for bearings and I couldn't see the benefits of running a 0w outweighing the additional risk (unless you live in Alaska or something). Stick to 5w30 or 10w30 and you'll be fine.

agreed there, if there was a benefit to switching to 0w30 over 5w30 without harming the engines, they would have done it, but they didnt, so i would stick with 5w30.

I've used 5w-30 and 10w-30. Can't tell ANY difference.

I will run Castrol, Valveline, Quaker State and Halvoline (usually the first 3). I am also running conventional, not synthetic. That being said, my '94 Grand Am with a 3100 is about 6 days (under my normal commute) from crossing 200K miles. I changed the head gaskets on my Grand Am last October (at about 188K miles) and I don't think that had anything to do with the oil I've used. Drive train is running smooth and still as strong as the day I bought the car.

As for filters, I like BOSCH. I've tried many filters in previous cars (FRAM, STP, etc) and I think the oil seems to look a little cleaner the times I've used Bosch. www.RockAuto.com had a good price on their filters about a year ago. I have almost enough to keep my fleet in Bosch for 3 years after that purchase last year or so ago....
