NEWBIE HELP!!!!!!!!
O.k guys I am a newbie at the car thing and am trying to help my husband rebuild an 86 ss. So for christmas I am looking at buying him a carburetor because the one he has in right now is the orginial and yeah it needs to be replace have any ideas where I can go to get one or what kind all info is greatly appreciated! And one other question.... any ideas about this it has a leak on the pass. side so when it rains it goes down behind the stereo area and on the pass. side I heard it could be the firewall or the windshield any suggestions where I should take it to get it fixed. the leak is probably because the rubber trim has dry rotted around the windows, you could probably buy some replacement for him. as for the carburetor, i like the holley's. the formula for a carburetor, i believe, is the maximum rpm's the engine will run x the cubic inch displacemnet (CID) of the engine divided by some number like 3456, or something like taht. theres 4 numbers, and they go in order. somebody on here probably knows it.
For a carb it depends on what he plans on doing with the car. If it going to be more of a street cruiser I would go with a 600-700 CFm vac secondary holley. If it is gonna see alot of strip time I would look more towards a double pumper.

RACING CARB. CFM = RPM X DISPLACEMENT ÷ 3456 X 1.10
RPM being max RPM ie: 5500

for your carb if you have all ecu stuff disconected i would go with a 600cfm edelbrock but if you still have all the ecu running condition your stuck with the ccc Q-jet unless you want to change the distributor to a vacume advance unit

The Displacement is the cubic inches of the engine, If it is stock it is probably a 305 ci or a 5.0 liter
so CFM=5500 X 305 ÷ 3456 X 0.85
so basically a 413 CFM carb. So a vacuum secandary 600 would be more than enough for what ya need unless like asked, if the factory computer control is all still hooked up you will need to change the distributor also to go to a better aftermarket carb.
The leak is the ac box on the pass. side fire wall. in the engine bay. it drys out and needs to be replaced.
