I would go on craigslist and find yourself a 350 on there. I would get an 86 or newer with the one piece rear main seal. The older ones had a two piece that had a tendency to leak a lot of oil. The best would be a vortec 350 out of a 96-99 chevy pickup\SUV. They make good power for the money, and Vortec iron heads are some of the best factory production iron heads chevy made. Just throw a vortec carb intake and carb of your choice on it.

Or you could find a 5.3 LS engine out of a wrecked pickup or SUV, and convert it to carb. This is what i'm probably going to be doing with my next project. Me and a friend of mine are actually doing an LS swap in his 87 camaro right now.

Any 350 really is the cheapest/easiest way to go.The LSX swap(5.3/6.0)has a lot of cost involved.A 350will just drop right in.
For a 350 you need to know engine year(pre86/post 86),rear seal type(1 pease or 2 pease),cylinder head type(vortec/non vortec),an cam type (roller non roller).
You can build a fairly stout an powerful engine with little cost.
