6th Gen ('00-'05): Fuel Pump Problem PLEASE HELP!
alright well today I had to work so i couldnt get much accomplished I bought some seafoam and put it in my fuel tank and to be honest it really didnt do much. Still running at a very uneven idle and sputters when I drove it home! I was suppose to visit home but I dont think thats going to happen since I dont have a dependable car right now. I fellow monte owner I customer at my job (Walmart tire&lube) said something about the fuel pressure regulator was going out on his do any of you all think replacing that might help?? Im trying to avoid taking it to a mechanic but i really dont know how to do much myself so im kind of in the slumps right now.
Saw this question and answer below....Plus I doubt you can drop your fuel tank from underneath without disconnecting the wires to the pump / sending unit from above. The pump is really easy to remove from above, versus draining your tank, removing the filler neck, support straps etc. You can go to a dealership and get a free estimate and diagnosis as to what they think the problem is. Just might save you replacing alot of unnecessary parts and save money in the long run.

The most likely problem is that you have a stuck/failed Idle Air Controller. This is a device that (as its name implies...;-D...) controls the air flow into the engine when you have your foot off of the accelerator pedal (which closes the throttle plate and chokes off air to the engine).
By pressing on the accelerator pedal, you are allowing some air into the engine which enables it to run. Once you take your foot off, the throttle closes and the engine starves for air.

Fuel Pump was your first concern and you were wanting to drop the tank instead of accessing through trunk due to Sound System.
I did mine in an hour from inside my car through folding down the back seat. Lots of mats and fresh air... dirty job and gas fumes... but didn t have to remove the system , still had a foot of room behind the seat.
