Hopefully this is in the right topic.

I have an 01 SS with just over 112k, that has gotten into the habit of not starting, out of no where, about once a week now. It's rather odd, and of course the dealer can't duplicate it, so they pretty much tell me I'm full of it. It happened just last night. I turn the key, the starter cranks and if it doesn't fire right up, I know it's not going to start. When it doesn't start, it cranks, but doesn't "try" to start, like it's not getting fuel somewhere? It doesn't sputter or anything. (the dealer asks if there's gas in the tank.....) When it does this, it DOES end up starting, but it's usually 10-20 minutes later. Once it's running, it runs fine. It doesn't sputter or stall, idles and accelerates fine. Any other time, it starts just fine, instantly.

I am definitely no mechanic, so I have no clue where to even begin. I'm hoping maybe someone on here can point me in the right direction, or at least give some ideas. Anything is better than what I can't come up with!

 

maybe its the fuel filter. sounds like its not getting gas sometimes

 

Sometimes the Passlock can also cause it, usually it just does nothing. It gets just enough fuel but shuts it off bevause it thinks you are trying to steal it. Does your security light come on and flash when it pulls that stunt?

 

No, the light doesn't come on. Everything appears to be normal, other than it doesn't start. It's a real pain, when you're ready to go. My fiance is afraid to drive it at all, not knowing if it will die somewhere and not start again.

Would the fuel filter only cause the problem at random times? Or would it run bad most of the time? It runs fine, other than the few times it doesn't start. It's almost like it's not sending gas, when it should be. (if that makes any sense?)

 

Well, I hate to dig a post up from the grave, but it's time for an update.

It went to the dealer, for an unrelated issue about a month ago and they connected it to the diagnostic thing. Since then, it's started every time (knock on wood!) and has ran well, until today. I was cruising down the road like I do every morning and it shut off. It sputtered for half a second, and that was it. All of the electronics stayed on, it's like the engine was just turned off. I put it in neutral and started it right back up, and continued on my way.

It's very random and off the wall, I don't know what would cause it. I'm just afraid of it happening on the highway, and all of a sudden not having power. I know if I take it to a shop they will tell me they couldn't duplicate it and send me on my way. Any ideas??

 

i had something like this happen to me, just as you explained it, the car would start fine and run with no issues, but once and a while it just wouldn't start, wouldn't even crank...just click (i had all power options, radio, headlight all worked fine)

Turned out to be the post on the battery, it seems it was starting to pull away from the internal contacts and causing my issue.
