Default D and N indicators on dash not working.

I apologize for my first post being a question, and I have searched, but I haven't come across this specific question. 2002 ss that has had some starting issues. Every once in a while I turn the key and nothing happens, I bang the shifter around and hit the brakes a few times and it starts. Yesterday it finally quit. No amount of turning the keys or banging the shifter around is working. I also noticed that the D and N indicators on the dash are not working. Is this a neutral safety switch, shiftlock switch or what? I need to get this car moved! Battery is good, tested good, starter has not had any problems so far. Checked all the fuses, they look good but did not get a meter on them.
