I have a 86 Monte Carlo SS with a 305 in it. I want to do an engine swap but don't know what to swap it out with. I want a something with around 385hp but also don't want to break my bank. I won't be racing at tracks or drag strips, its more for if someone wants to race I want to keep up with them. whats the best way to approach this? a crate engine or rebuilt

 

You can pick a 350 up pretty cheap an rebuild it for less than most crate engines an easily get around 350-400 hp. Or there's plenty of crate engines out there that make good power
