4t603 swap to 4t65e
Is there any wiring changes that needs to be done to swap from a 4t60e to a 4t65e? I have a 1996 Monte Carlo Z34 and want to swap the transmission from a 1997 Grand Prix GTP. Will the transmission bolt right up? Do the axles or computer need to be changed?
the trany will bolt up, the axles wont. you will need axles from a 98, 99 Z34 monte. your computer and wire harness wont work. you will need a 97 computer and harness. also if you use a GTP trany the gear ratio in the trany will be very different.
it will have a 2.92 final drive vs the 3.43 that you have currently. i would actually recommend a trany out of a grand prix GT as it has a 3.29 final drive. unless you find a trany from a 97 Z34 you will need to have the PCM tuned for the correct gear ratio (97 Z34 4t65e's had the 3.43 gears) a lower number gear will help mpg on the highway but will hurt the low end acceleration of the car. i dont recommend swapping to a lower gear unless you have lots of mods or Turbo or SC.
I saw your other thread about the leak. but swapping to another type of trany is more work then needed. the amount of work required to swap to a 4t65e is about the same as doing a swap to a full GTP engine trany setup.

I dont want to go through that much trouble to change the transmission. I have just been reading up and everything says the 4t65e is a better and stronger transmission. My z34 is all stock and not looking to race. I just want descent power and reliability. Thanks Z34Phoenix!!! Think I will go another route.
