350 engine build. 86 monte ss
hey guys i plan to buy a 350 from a junky.. i want to do a rebuild on it.. i have a few questions.. i know i need full gasket set water/oilpump. engine bearings ect. should i use some std size bearings? iv built a few honda motors with out mircometers and dial bore guges and both have failed.. so i dont need that..also i plan to put my 86 ss 305 heads on the 350 for more compression.. will they work with my "305" edelbrock intake manifold. i read some years the manifold is not compatable.
the set up i want is stock rebuild 350 block,305 heads with a mild comp cam some long tubes and my intake setup(if it will work).. any input on building the motor such as wat heads are compatable depending on the years of course... pretty much how do i identify my intake manifold.. saposidly it came off a chevy truck and idk wat it fits. and bearings and heads is wat im confused about. i dont know anything about v8's but i here the bearing clearences are as "vital" so to speak as a honda motor..

hmm sounds just about identicle to my build for sure get yourself a micromitter and boar guages so you can see if things are within specs, but unless bearing have been spun you should be fine just throwing new standard size in there, just remeber thats what your depending on for you motors life so don't be cheap, the intake part # is on the top towards the dist, if the # is 1400376 i can tell you it will work 100% becuase that what mine is and it's a 350 intake i'll be using with my 305 heads i will warn u tho don't plan on having any power over 5g becuase the intake runmers are so small,
realisticly to get some power out of it fin yourself a set of vortec heads, you will have to buy an intake but you will make way more power
almost all small block chevy heads are interchaingiable

if your going to be picking up a motor from the junkyard. run the heads that are on the motor. if you want compression you can run flat tops. a full rebuild kit can be had for cheap with pistons included. heres a couple links. you can pick your cam and what not. i agree on the vortec thing its the best factory head you can get. i personally dont think the 305 heads are worth it. if your going to run factory heads run the 350 heads. get a valve job, do the valve seals, guides. and springs and call it a day. they wont be great but for now theyll do. heads are were your powers at and the factory stuff isnt really worth porting, or running bigger valves. that and aftermarket heads are more affordable these days and will outperform the stuff youll find in the yard.

sweet input guys.. yeah i heard the 305 head ports are much smaller but im good with a dremal/
i have self ported a few honda heads an ran them.. noticed a tiny bit of power nothing serious since it was such mild work.. but vortec heads i kno are the best and prob worth it.. wat if i picked up a full vortec 350 would i use all my parts on that? also on the bearing thing i have run honda motors then change the bearings to oem std size.. did the assembly perfact fired it up drove it.. boom spun a bearings. iv had bad luck with assembling honda blocks. so maybe dialbore guage and mic's is the next step.. haha,. so idk any more input an a price on a whole vtec swap estimate would be sweet. sorry for the horribly placed words.. a bit drunk lol.

also whats the dif between the vortec heads and the regular chevy 350 heads? compression dif? and can i use the intkae mani with regular 350 heads... if not thats outa the question i wana put this free intake mani and carb to use.. unless someone has a trade?.......
personally i wouldnt waste my time with any of the 305 stuff. especially the factory heads, intake and quadrajet. i would pick up a complete 350 or larger small block get a used carb and intake (examples are linked at the bottom of this. im sure you can find a used carb and intake setup cheaper at a local speed shop but just wanted to give an example of how affordable used small block stuff is.) freshen up the bottom end, baby cam, flat tops, freshen the heads up. just seals and guides, and then save up for a decent set of aftermarket heads. this is all just my personal opinion. it just seems to me like a waste of time to pull a motor from the yard do bearings and rings, stab a cam in it, and then slap a bunch of 305 stuff on it. its not really going to perform well and to me it would be disappointing. the vortec heads require a specific intake manifold, so your current intake wont work on it. the vortec intakes can be found for a little more then the standard small block intake. example at the bottom.
good luck with it.
