I had the same issue w/ my 01, hard shifts and a loud whining noise. Eventually it got so bad it didnt want to move.. $1800 to rebuild in Cincinnati.
I had a whining noise come back 3 years later and it was the idler pulley on the belt tensioner...

basically I figured it to be the same as 3-4 car payments on a new car. I'm keeping it!

Amcco sounds like a sketchy place. There is absolutely no reason a tranny or wheel bearings should be going at 80k miles. I would say take it to at least a GM dealer and ask them to check it out. Don't even make mention of the tranny or wheel bearings, only the noise and see what they say.

Wheel bearings can very much go at only 80,000.

Yes, they can, but I would rather get a second opinion then spend thousands replacing wheel bearings and a tranny at some shop doing a free inspection. How do you think they pay for all of their time?

Holy crap, talk about some crappy places, know anyone with a tuner or maybe have autozone read the codes?
