OK I am a firm beliver in the Mother's 3 step process
Pre wax cleaner
polish
pure carbunia wax (no cleaner)
Takes a heck of a long time. Just look at the Deuce 7 years old, and shines better than the day I brought her home from the dealer

You should add a compound before the polish. It actually might make the process a little quicker for you. The compound is a little rougher so if you have to go over it a few times with polish, it might just be one pass for compound.
I generally do wash and then after that I apply one coat of wax and sometimes 2. Its all done by hand with no power buffer so my arm is dead the next day but it looks good! I have done the claybar in the past and that helped. I have like 5 meguires waxes. lol. 2 are the same but I generally use the ultimate compound and then maybe the NXT 2.0.
