they used to have someone otu there that advertised they could reseal the wheels if you were to clean them up real nice and prudy then you could do this and it would help keep them clean. other wise FLITZ is the best stuff i have seen for aluminum and chrome.
also if the center caps have the stickers on them with the pontiac symbol go to the G.M. dealer and get some with bow ties im not sure what years had them btu i belive they were the same size.
I did it with my old nova it had GMC sonoma wheels under it but i had changed them out with the bow ties on them but it was a easy fix the S-10 had them.
But might be a cavilier thing to

I used some spray-on wheel cleaner on my grand am's rims. The kind you spray-on and let sit for one minute then hose off. I used a rag while hosing off the wheel to help get the brake dust and other crud from the tight spaces. They didn't come out 100%, but they were at least 98%. Only some small black spots in the tight spots were baked into the plastic.
They do look good. As long as you're alright with the fact they're not real chrome. Sounds like you didn't pay the premium price of a real chrome rim. If that was the case with me, I would have been fine with it. But they charged me an extra $450and told me I was getting chrome rims. So I was really p***ed off. But I did like how they looked.

WhenI got my rims I tried putting the stock 16" rims from my 02 MC onto my daughter's 02 Grand Am and they wouldn't work. It's been a few years ago and I don't remember why they wouldn't work, maybe the tires rubbed, or the rim hit on something? Oh, well, the perils of getting old...Anyway, I'd trythem on the carbefore I paid for them, just in case.

That stuff in your pic was the same stuff I couldn't get off too. The bottle of wheel cleaner I had said I should keep re-applying to trouble areas, but I decided to just live with it. Besides, I didn't want to take a chance at ruining the plastic.
I think your Monte wheels didn't fit because of the width of the tire. If memory serves we correctly, the grand am tires are slightly narrower.

What I have used to get rid of break dust is wheel polish(cotton candy style, liquid stuff is junk) or disk break cleaner. You shouldn't use harsh chemicals on chrome but it works & we do it. To get rid of the brown in the chrome car polish (liquid) works great, but not for thick break dust "bumps".
