They say they fit the 2007

Those are the struts I am thinking about buying. The only things that are holding me back are: Will they fit on my 2002? (Don't see why they wouldn't) and would the AGX's be better? (But even the AGX's say (Excl. Special Handling Package)

Not sure what you mean? I honestly didn't know until today that there was two different kinds of GR-2 struts for our cars. I guess it will possibly have to be a question for a local KYB dealer if the 2004-Up GR-2's will fit or not on a 2002 Monte or not. Cause from what I understand the more expensive GR-2's that say they are for the 2004-Up are KYB's OE version of the FE4 strut package. Or like I said I can say screw it and get the AGX's.

I am waiting on and E-mail in to KYB. I don't see why they wouldn't fit either but just to make sure.

I e-mailed KYB and got this response:

Are the 339015 and 339148 GR-2 struts structurally the same as the 334227 and 334228 struts? Meaning, is everything on the strut itself the same between the two models?

No they are different in length, mounting and mouniting rates.

If I was to get coil springs to drop my car around 1.5” can I use the GR-2s without voiding the warranty or do I have to use the AGX struts?

If you modify your suspension with any springs non-oe design... this will void the warranty whether you use AGX or GR-2.

--So that leaves me wondering if the GR-2s for the 2004 Monte (according to their site) would work for my 2002.
Are the FE3 and FE4 stock struts THAT different? Maybe I should just get the AGXs and call it a day lol

I know this is an old thread but its got my attn and some of us are simply late to the party.
I own a 2004 Monte Carlo SS. The vin decode states I get the ‘sport suspension’. On the door placard it states FE3. From reading other posts I was thinkng FE3 was for Impala. That’s not the case here.

My brother owns a 2004 Monte Carl SS S/C Dale Jr car. The vin decode states it has the performance suspension.

Based on an article from Car and Driverdated April of 2004 (I forget the source) it stated the Dale Jr car got stiffer springs and firmer suspension and was lowered 1/2”.

Looking at the vin decode of both vehicles the SS vs the SS S/C the diamtere of the front and rear sway bars were also larger diameter for the Jr car.

I love the Monte Carlo SS from the years ‘00-05. I especially love the firmer suspension and handling of the Jr car. I wish I could easily upgrade my SS to the handling of the Jr car.
i do have American Racing wheels on my SS. The back side of the rear wheel just barely clears the strut/spring holder - maybe by about 3/8th of and inch.
I suspect that is why when looking at replacement strut assemblies there is several to choose from and they specifically state 16” rims excluding 17”-18” special handling option.

Question - I’d like to at least tighten up the ride to a firmer one like the Jr car.
I’m on a budget so cost is important.
what would yall suggest?
This is a little more important now because my passenger rear strut appears to need replacing...its bouncing around back there.

I got a quote from a local mechanic today and - ready for this - $829 for a pair of strut assemblys for the rear - from a company SRT. Part number srt333354. This includes the strut and the spring. The 829 breaks down to 531 parts and 255 labor. 76 for links (sway bar ?).
SRT is a bad name for a company all my searching does is show Dodge SRT hits.
But the 333354 looks like a Monroe part number for this application.

You might want to check Rock Auto dot com and see what this would cost for parts thru them. Then go to you tube and see if they have a video for the replacing of the shocks and maybe you could do the work yourself.
