Definitely paint the area behind it flat black as it just doent look right with it being red behind the grille. With it being flat back it creates the illusion there is a hole behind the grille.

thanks, looks good.i'm still on the fence about painting the grille.yours turned out really nice!

Bought the cheap #$@%^& ($90) on ebay ..it doesnt come with tape ..was gonna use the larger red SS in place of bowtie..anybody see anything wrong with just using clear or black silicone sparingly to bond grille to car and SS to grille???

If you buy it on ebay it DOES NOT come with the mounting tape. It specifies that in the description of the product.

If you order from GMPARTSDIRECT.COM or the 3800PERFORMANCE.COM link I said, they do come with mounting tape.

Default yeah i knew that..

:p also saved 40-80 bucks and im able to use an SS emblem ..any way you look at it,this is a gigantic ripoff and profit margin..i mean we are talking about $2.00 most of plastic..and i bought it knowing that..my question is the way i was planning to mount the grille on the car after taking badge off and painting behind grille area..im thinking silicone ..why buy/use tape??
Its gonna be a permenant install and waterbased silicone gives ya a few seconds to position it right..and wipe up any bleed threws with water if needed..2 sided tape is usually a one shot application..get the postioning wrong and see what happens..my .02 cents

Personally, I would use the tape, Just be carefull when installing it and lightly get it in position. Just peeling the corners of the tape back , get it where you want it and slowly peel the tape back. Then press it on firmly.
I positioned mine where I wanted it before I put the tape on and outlined the location with masking tape, so I knew exactly where to start. I don't like useing silicone on a painted surface.

I don't see any reason the silicone wouldn't work, but I'd use clear not black. It might actually be a good idea since it would seal moisture out better for when you wash your car. My grille always "runs" - hard to dry. The SS logo is awesome and I'm glad its catching on. I still think you want to paint behind the grille. If you use no surface prep, a single coat of flat black spray paint would be removeable with a little elbow grease and wax if you ever wanted to remove it, but you won't. And it'll look better.

I think the silicone is a good idea though and I may re-do my roof rails with it.

Default definetly going to paint behind grille..

think ill go to home cheapo and buy the clear silicone (water based)...and
one can flat (for behind grille) one can satin (for grille) and ill buy the for plastic paint..
Tape off like shown in previous post..thanx for that!

if i go semi gloss on grill it would come out cheesy looking..although the black mirrors and some trim is gloss..ggrrr.. im spending more time writing about it than doin it..haha
