Mornin guys. Just relaxing a bit.
BeachBum Mike! interestingly enough, if you take the F2s out of the equation, Florida drops way off in numbers of tornadoes. Oklahoma has more F5/EF5 tornadoes since 1950 (the earliest tornadoes to be rated on the Fujita scale) than any other state, with Alabama in second. There are I believe 5 F4/EF4s in Oklahoma that there was some dispute that they were in fact EF5s (including 2 in 2011 that were within 30 miles of another EF5 that all touched down in a 30-45 minute time span) and in Alabama, the April 27 2011 Tuscaloosa storm was also disputed to be a possible EF5. Also, the May 31 El Reno tornado (the largest tornado in terms of width in recorded history) had measured winds of almost 300 mph, but did not hit any structures while it was at that strength, so it was only rated as an EF3. To this day, the highest recorded winds in a tornado (and I believe on Earth) remains the May 3 1999 Moore tornado, with winds of 318 mph. Interestingly enough, multiple F/EF5s in one day in Oklahoma is not unprecedented. It happened in the mid 50s all in north-central Oklahoma.
Just some interesting weather trivia for today. I wasn't in the state to chase in 2011 but that was a busy day tracking for me as I was watching out for family and friends. Devin, I hope you enjoy the trivia as well.
