MARATHON, Fla. -- [/b]Officials said a Michigan woman died after a 75-pound stingray jumped out of the water and struck her in the upper body in the Florida Keys.
Judy Kay Zagorski, 57, of Pigeon, Mich., was sitting in the front seat of a boat going 25 mph when the spotted eagle ray, with a wingspan of 5 to 6 feet, leaped out of the water, said a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The 57-year-old woman's father was driving the boat on the Atlantic Ocean side of Vaca Key, the spokesman said.
The impact likely killed the woman, and she did not appear to have puncture wounds from the ray's barb. An autopsy is planned.
Spotted eagle rays can grow up to 17 feet in length, weigh up to 500 pounds and have a wingspan of up to 10 feet.
They are known to occasionally jump out of the water but are not aggressive and use the venomous tip at the end of their tail as a defense mechanism.

That's just proof that if it is your time to go it is your time to go, and you can't do anything about it. This lady lived about an hour from where I grew up. I never knew her, but it's still weird. Be safe everyone.
Thanks for such a great post Space!
Most people don't expect what they're currently doing, to be the last thing they do.
I'm sure Steve Irwin wasn't expecting to die from a sting ray sting. He probably figured he'll finish up this little video for his and his daughter's t.v. special, then go on home to his family.

You areWelcome Mod `Taz, and member's.
I was taught by my grandfather that human life is fragile,
and that we must always enjoy the `now.
I do my best to remember his teachings, & always
treat those in my life with that knowledge.
What `if ?
Many don't like to think about `it, but you read,
and hear it everyday in the news of the unexpected
events in our life, in our World.

I have not been able to prove the teachings of my
grandfather, to be wrong.
We must do our best with every day we are given.
It is a present...It is the `Now.
EnJoy your `Now, your present.

Thanks for the post, Mr. Space. I was very skeptical when I heard this story a few days ago. I grew up in an environment surrounded by sting rays (we even have an area at the sandbar where you can play with them) and I just could not fathom exactly how a ray would leap from the ocean and attack a human. I envisioned the woman was sun bathing on the bow of the boat, it was anchored, and the ray jumped out and landed on her and stung her to death. It seemed too impossible to me. Now I can understand how that is possible.
