Very heavy subject!
I'm certainly no authority on the issue, but I do think it is a good idea to train a child in self defense early. Primarily I would think the concern is for your son's safety, so he's gotta be able to handle himself. This alone won't resolve things because kids can be little bastards. Whatever is motivating this bully may escalate to weapons of sorts even if your son can successfully defend himself. That is messed up. I'd be confronting some parents and letting them know, one way or another, they will pay for the consequences of their childs actions.
I don't know why kids have to behave like this, but if you can figure that out there will be a solution there. More and more I'm believing in home schooling so we can all turn out like 'Space
