The digital scanners are all over 400 bucks. I would not recommend the Uniden scanners as they're more difficult to program. I have a handheld GRECOM PSR-500 and plan to get a PSR600 (base/mounted version) when I get my truck set up. I've heard some funny stuff from Kentucky State Police when I'm up there as well as Nashville Metro. The GRECOM ones (which the radio shack scanners are based off of) are very user friendly. I also still have my old PRO-94 (analog only) that I use some when I'm out chasing to help monitor other ham frequencies.

OK as far as legality, there are two states that I know of that outright ban scanner use in a vehicle (Kentucky and Indiana) and one or two others that are iffy. However, all the states that ban use in vehicles have an exception for those with an FCC license (like I have). So I can legally have my scanner all I want in those states.

Our grandparents have one they rarely use anymore. They use to have it on all the time when I was younger so I never got away with anything lol. Everytime I got pulled over they'd ask about it.

as far as im concerned i doubt radioshack would be selling something thats illegal to own. The one i have is a Pro-135 and my dad has a pro-xx. I've never had any issues with police or anything and we've got scanner antennas on both cars. Can be amusing to hear some of the things that go on

Not that I want to or anything but I think my brother in law had a modified scanner and that's how he was able to listen to cordless phones? How could someone modify a scanner? And do any of you have one that has been modified?

Would be a matter of knowing the frequency it operates on. I had mine programmed to pick up 2 way radios
