OKAY. heres the story. back in oct my car started dripping oil in the garage. about the size of a penny. i took it to the chevy dealer and they tell me its the Oil Pan Gasket. So.. OK. i have it replaced. Oil continues to drip. but a little less than it was, now probably the size of a dime. but its still dripping.. which i dont like. I bring it back to the chevy dealer and tell them that its still happening. they throw it up on the lift and look under it and say that there was still oil on the chasis and they wiped it all down. OK thx! i leave. it continues to happen. i go back up there, and they said theyre unsure why this is happening. they add some Oil Dye into my car to see if its circulating through the engine or if its still old oil dripping somewhere else. OK. it continues to drip but its redish now. so IT is circulating through the engine..

NOW they said i could leave it there for a day while they do some tests and leave it running for about 40 min and try to trace where the drips are coming from. they think it maybe coming from the lip of the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal but arent sure...

Theyre very nice and are trying the best they can to diagnose this.

now my question is.. has ANYONE else had or is having this same issue? is this common?

If it's "redish" it could be trans fluid. Oil is typically not redish (not sure what the dye does to it, also is it a UV dye?).

But based on your account, I'd stop going to that dealership, it sounds like they are doing POOR diagnostics.

Have you noticed any actual loss of trans fluid or oil at the dip stick?

I'd jack it up and look underneath, see if the oil filter or drain plug is loose. Also, the drain plug should have a small rubber gasket on it (it's commonly over looked). I just changed the drain plug gasket on my Grand Am and the wife's Impala (I will do it on the Monte as I summer-ize). I've never changed drain plug gaskets before, but like you mentioned, my Grand Am is loosing oil, under chassis is oily, so I figured, let's see if this does it.

Sorry to read about your mystery leak , but if you paid them to fix it, then they should...

I would only leave your Monte with them if they gave you a New S.S. Camaro or New Vette to drive until they fix it right.

Are they reimbursing you for your time/cost to return for them to fix their mistake ? Yes, let it run for 40 minutes & you find the leak & pay for the fuel you burn for 40 minutes.
(Idling is hard on a engine)

it wasnt redish at first but the dye they used was red and it made the oil redish! thanks for the feedbackk i maybe i should check the drain plug gasket myself. thanks for the input!


thanks for the response space! and yeah that would be nice if they gave me a new car until the fix it! theyre trying the best they can! but i think im just gunna leave it and just keep checking the oil myself and when it gets low im gunna put more in

 

If you look under the car can you spot a spot that appears more oily then the rest? I had a oil leak that slowly got worse and it turned out to the oil pressure switch right next to the filter.

 

It could be valve cover gaskets too. They leak all the time in
GM motors.

 

Man that sucks! hopefully they can get it fixed right so you don't have to keep going back.

 

Get the engine bay, engine, and under carriage pressure washed. It is had to determine where a leak is coming from if everything has oil on it. Once everything is clean then you can determine where fresh oil is coming from.

 

Mouse is right, degrease the engine (I'd get a can of engine degreaser, use a pressure washer, hit it from top and bottom with the degreaser, then pressure was).

If it's oil, common spots:
- LIM gaskets
- Oil pressure switch/sending unit
- Valve Cover gaskets

Just keep tabs to make sure it's oil with dye and not trans fluid.

 

is it toward the drivers side or passengers side? mine is leaking oil but i think i narrowed mine down to the front seal (crank seal)
