Not 1 Monte Carlo Entered!!
Way out in West Texas there is an annual race called The Big Bend Open Road Race. All are welcomed and very minor changed may be needed to qualify the car, plus you do the $200 rookie thing the week before for your card. NO SPEED LIMIT 59 miles each way on a public hwy. Parties the week before. Link: BBORR - 2013 Results Not 1 Monte Carlo participated, even though our cars qualify for any class up to 140 mph avg speed, round trip, w/o major mods. closest to the class avg wins. Now, a 1965 Corvair did 171 mph avg... go figure! Hotels reservations are needed looong in advance because of the lack of housing and super low unemployment rate there, so be warned, but as a veteran viewer, former resident and partier in the Ft Stockton area, it's worth it... Peace...
Fire Extinguisher, and make sure your tires are speed rated. Depending on the class you enter, you may need a harness belt and be sure your clothes are all cloth, leather, or wool. Higher classes need a fire suit. I see that this year they changed the entry rule, sadly, that you now need a previous rookie race under your belt to do this one... But they seem to have increased the tech speed (max class) before you're disqualified. There are some great videos on youtube showing some hairy passes attempted during the race.. This is a 2 way road, 59 miles each way...lol 1 class is unlimited speed
While that would be fun, I don't think any modern monte carlo will finish without eating its transmission. Unless you do a class from like 85-100.
I think you're right Keane.
I looked at the results. Every class was dominated by Corvettes except for the Top Speed 90 class. Most classes are dominated by high end sports cars. And I'd expect as much anyway. Unless your Monte is heavily modded for performance, enter the rally just for the sake of having fun. Don't expect to do well with a stock Monte of any generation. Which is probably why there wasn't any Montes entered this year.
I couldn't find a list of rules or requirements in the original poster's link. But I did look around the message board. I found that you need to mount a fire extinguisher and holder within reach of the driver. Most people mount theirs on the floor infront of the passenger's seat. I also read that if your seat belt is older than 5 years old, it has to be replaced. And anything that's not permanently bolted or glued down must be removed. Like center caps on wheels, etc. No suction cup mounts for GPS, radar detectors, or cell phones. Anything that can fall off and become a projectile has to be removed.
Basically, this is not something you can just take your stock daily driver vehicle to as is. Unless you're driving a modded rally race car as your daily driver. There's a whole list of requirements and technical specs you have to meet and be inspected for, in order to qualify.
