Wal-Mart crasher charged
By Dan Nienaber Tue Mar 23, 2010, 10:23 PM CDT
MANKATO — A man who drove his car into Mankato’s Wal-Mart Thursday morning is accused of ramming more than one car before leading officers on a chase that ended in the Supercenter’s dairy aisle.
Raymond Edward Mager Jr., 47, has been charged with several felonies, including assaulting a police officer and criminal damage to property. He’s accused of attempting to run over Blue Earth County Sheriff Brad Peterson in the Wal-Mart parking lot, using his Chevy Monte Carlo to drive through one of the store’s entrances and pointing a pellet gun at a store employee’s chest.
A warrant was issued for his arrest Friday because he is was still being evaluated at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center.
Several hours after a short standoff ended inside Wal-Mart, investigators heard from a man who said Mager had crashed into his car at about 3:30 the same morning. That man, identified only as “J.T.” in the criminal complaint, said he had left Good Thunder and was traveling east on Blue Earth County Road 10 when Mager started following him.
The man reported he had just passed the Highway 22 intersection when Mager crashed into the back of his car while they were both traveling between 55 and 60 mph.
He said he sped up to about 70 mph and was attempting to dial 911 on his cell phone when Mager struck him again. After the man pulled over and got the license plate of Mager’s car, there was a confrontation, the complaint said.
The man drove away and Mager followed before turning north toward St. Clair on County Road 28. Peterson was responding to a report of another hit-and-run at about 6:30 a.m. Thursday when he saw Mager driving a car matching the description on Highway 22 near the Madison Avenue intersection.
He pursued Mager as he turned right on to Bassett Drive behind Wal-Mart, then right again into the alley that leads between Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. After turning into the Wal-Mart lot and stopping in front of the entrance on the grocery side of the store, Mager allegedly backed into Peterson’s squad car.
Peterson, who was outside of the car, reported he was almost hit. Mager then drove into the store. He was arrested after waving a handgun, which turned out to be a pellet gun, at deputies and police and asking them to shoot him.
