If you only have one child, that child will always depend upon you for his entertainment. Having more than one child is easier except when they are babies. Two children will entertain each other and if one is doing something wrong the other one will come tell you.

I grew up as an only child and kept myself entertained (let's not even go into the reasons WHY I had to keep myself entertained, because I don't want turn this into a therapy session about my childhood). I read a lot. I was really big into computers too, first an Atari 800 XL and then the Commodore 64. I also had friends my age that lived nearby. We rode our bikes all over the place.
I have two daughters now, 9 (almost 10) and 7 years old. They fight a lot, which is no fun at all. Judging by their personalities, as an only child the oldest would probably keep herself entertained just like I did. My youngest always wants to be involved in everything her mom and dad does. I don't think one can say for sure having one child or several children is the better choice. It depends on everyone's individual situation.
