Brent, I'm really sorry to hear about the break-in. Your story reminded me of when my place was broken into years ago. They too used a brand new suit case to help carry out my stuff.
In addition to all the other good suggestions made by the forum, I was thinking about your wife's jewelry. Especially the heirlooms. I don't want to tell you what to do. But I can tell you this. If it was me, I would be constantly checking any pawn shops, gold exchanges, etc. for her jewelry. And even go as far as buy it back if I had to.
I know it's not what the police tell you to do. But to me, family heirlooms would be too important to lose it a second time while waiting for the police to act. If the police can even do anything. A lot of times, they tell you they can't 100% prove it is yours.
I have a couple houses like yours across the street from me. So I know exactly what you're talking about. They used to be single family homes that were converted to duplexes in the exact same way as yours. Like you said, the thief was able to break in your door in complete privacy. There's nothing you can do about the privacy thing. But I think the monitored security system is definitely a smart move.
This may sound strange coming from someone who is on multiple forums. But I would definitely be very careful about posting your schedule, planned trips, or times when nobody will be home. Especially on sites like facebook, where anybody can access your info. Forums are a little better, but not much. At least on forums, you can be as annonymous as you want.
If I were you, I would make sure to get someone to watch your place closely while you're using the tickets. Especially now that the thief knows what you have in the house.
I agree with the poster who said the neighbourhood doesn't really matter. Thieves will target any neighbourhood.
