Fwd vs rwd vs awd

I feel like most things in the US we think if it's not broke don't break it.... and RWD wasn't broke...
so What are the facts?
Where is the science behind RWD being the best? There has to be a reason why car companies switched from making rwd to fwd cars....

It was all about fuel economy. America seems to have a hard time accepting or dealing with the idea that they prefer speed to fuel economy. I guess everybody wants both. But ultimately car manufacturers would rather give us fuel economy over speed because it is cheaper for them to produce, thus more profitable. But there is a hole in that theory - about the whole Obama green GM. People do not want to pay a premium for fuel economy, but they will pay a premium for speed. That why the Volt sales haven't taken off like the Camaro...

There's a difference in AWD models I should say first. Some people think they're AWD SUV is going to be the best thing ever, but truthfully, it's RWD with probably 10% of the power going to the front wheels. Enough to make it AWD technically, but not really. If we are talking about a full 50/50, maybe 40/60 AWD car, they will be able to handle very well, since the cars computer helps push power to the correct wheels at the right time. AWD has it's place (rally and such), but I still prefer RWD
We made the switch to FWD for fuel economy like Brent was saying. But that's because they can mount the engine sideways and make smaller cars that still have plenty of room. FWD is only better in the snow because the weight of the car is on the drive wheels... if you have a RWD, you need to put weight on the drive wheels and get the right tires.
I'm pro RWD, it's much better to push the power than pull it. You also get the weight shift on acceleration to the rear tires. You put much more to driver skill, and less to what the car can do for you. Also when you are driving in corners and such, you can put the power down much earlier since the drive wheels aren't the cornering wheels.

I love AWD its fun i driven a few STis & such & look at tge new GTR its one of the fastest accelerating cars & its AWD plus for snow or ice it has major advantage, but RWD is fun, get to do some sweet burnouts & can let the tail go sideways & RWD isnt bad in snow i drove my SRT8 a few times in snow itll spin for a second & than off you go, most car companies have added alot of driver aids for such reasons, FWD is just plan boring imo lol

It's all a matter of opinion there is no fwd is better or rwd or awd.It all comes down to the driver.
For me it's right wheel driveI love rwd the feel an handling to me is better.Fwd does nother for me.As far as driving in snow i'd still take rwd.I learn to drive in snow with a 5speed peg leg pick up.An I was pulling 4x4 out the ditch with it.Awd is ok but it's not some thing I like to drive a lot.For those that never really learned to drive the snow it's great. But when you go a round a circle/rotory an lap a evo doing 65-70 in the snow side ways it's always a blast.

I second this. I was gonna say something along this line. And that it is also all about personal preference.
