Double clutching vs clutch-less shifting anyone?

my 93 ranger was hell to shift,you had to push the clutch down about a good ft. or it would grind,cars seem simpler with less of a clutch to push,but I don't know much about standards I only drove it three months before I tore it up (always left parking break on and forgot about it lol) my eclipse was auto with the slap stick in it and it always seemed way slower without using it,i stomped on it and it wouldn't even pick up,still neat to use though
