Default Cost to raise a dog

OK I have a question for all of you that have a dog. I was wondering about how much a month you spend on your dog on food, vet check-ups and other things. I am looking to maybe get a medium sized dog once I move into my new place but I want to be sure that I have the ability to take care of it. I have a decent amount of space inside and I will be living in an area with plenty of room for walks and such so the actual physical act of taking care of the dog I will have no problem controling. I dont want to get a dog and it end up costing way more to take care of than I planned. I would be waiting a few months after I move in to get one anyway so I can get a good idea of my monthly budget without having to guess. I dont think it will be a problem I just like to be prepared. Thanks for your input.

Id say my doggies eats a larger bag about every month or so. Figure that cost, worming pills, and the occasional check up, mainy for shots. Get the price to those and thats it.

Yea, about 1 large bag of food a month, treats, annual check ups/ shots, worm pills, and we use that Advantage flee and tick stuff too (which is kinda expensive, I wanna say its like $45 for 3 months??).

Remember to look into Pet Insurance. I believe you can get it and it will help in case of emergency hospital visits.

My sister just now started to look at insurance, because her dog had a spinal injury and was temporarily paralyzed, $5000 later and they were able to refuse the spine and get him to walk.

They only had 24 hours from the time he couldn't move to actually fix it.

Trying not to sound too corny but the benefits of owing a dog far exceeds the cost of owning a dog. No matter how bad of a day you've had your dog will always be happy to see you and it just makes the day bearable!

I have a Border Collie she'll eat a large bag of food in about 2 months approx. $12 a month, flea & tick runs another $10-15 a month vet bill is around $100-200 a year. Neighborhood of $1 a day.... sounds about right.

When and if you do decide, please visit a local shelter. Animals there seem to "know" that your saving them.

Oh I will definately be visiting a shelter. Not only are you rescuing a pet, but you know they have had proper medical care and you will be made aware of any medical problems. Its far cheaper to go to a shelter as well. Thanks for the replies. I will definately be getting a dog. I will wait to get settled in first and then start looking for dogs. I want a medium sized dog. Like a border collie sized dog but maybe not as energetic. There is a good shelter close to here that I will be checking out.

Space, I have all the paperwork done and I close on the 18th of this month. I will wait to post more info until after closing so I cant take more pictures and such.

i have two small dogs so thats pretty equal to one medium sized dog.

20 bucks a month in food. give or take on what you want to feed them. i use iams premium protection. i thinks is 19 bucks for an 18 lb bag. you see that different foods will make there poop runny and certain kinds they wont even eat.

worm check is about 100 bucks. once thats done i think its like 1 dollar a month for medicine.

10 bucks a month for flea stuff. i use advantage or advantix, its like 10 bucks a month. i only use it from spring till late fall. when it snows fleas dont survive. just give it a bath and keep your house clean.

spade/neuter is around 125-150

the first year is the worst with all the shots. maybe 300 for 3 sets. after that its not too bad, maybe once a year or 3 depending on what they need.

then toys, bones, treats, beds, clothes, collars........

really thats doing it right.

some people cut there hair some go to groomers, same for nails. its much cheaper to do yourself.

its worth it for sure, i love my dogs.

remember you dont need all that stuff at once.

the only time its real expensive is when they have to go to the vet, then its your choice. usually pure bred dogs are the worst for health problems. get yourself a good mut and be happy.
