If it's like when they filmed one of the SpiderMan movies here, they removed street signs and covered various store fronts. As Mogwog said, they wanted the building scape. Odds are in the movie, the action will be so fast, you really can't tell where the scene was filmed (in Spiderman, that was the case).
@Space - I think my Monte is FAR from all that action

I'm sure I'll get some more pictures later...they're going to be there for almost the rest of August, then I think they'll be filming in a few other spots.
And yes, she says she has a hard time focusing on work... she has tons of people in her office all day looking out the window. One of the first days of filming she said they re-did a gun battle scene practically all day... Here's a video w/ that > The Avengers: Panicked extras run the streets - Video | cleveland.com
Also, here's the video for the explosion in the pictures...The Avengers: Video of things blowing up in downtown Cleveland, crowds thrilled | cleveland.com

This is cool.
I"m sure it a WHOLE lot cheaper to film in Cleveland, OH vs New York City. Permits, blocking streets and such.
And the film industry is a business. LIke others, set up to make money not loose it.
I don't think I could have gotten a single thing done @ work.

So, today was my last day working in DownTown Cleveland (I accepted a new job start on 22nd for a new company, my last day with my current company I will be at a non-DownTown building).
Today, I cut through an alley on the way back from lunch and saw trailers and food tents and a guy grilling up food that smelled awesome. All near the filming spot!
And I work very close to Tower City. All this week they've had part of Public Square blocked off. Appears to be part of the movie (someone told me it's to make it look Russian). I want to take the wife to see it, pretty neat! I hope to see it in the upcoming movie and be amazed!
