5 do-it-yourself emergency roadside repairs

By Charles Plueddeman of MSN Autos

The sickly sweet smell of hot coolant is never a good sign. It typically signals that a hose is blown and that your car isn't going anywhere, bad news when you're, say, on the side of the road somewhere in rural South Dakota and you have no cell phone reception. In such an emergency, you have two choices: Wait for a tow truck or a good Samaritan to pass by, or fix the problem yourself. With just some basic tools and ingenuity, you can be rolling again quickly. Click through for tips and temporary solutions to five common problems that could leave you stranded on the roadside.

I have a few tools and such in the trunk.

I carry Torx bits, sockets, wrenches, have a bottle of 50,50 coolant. Oil, MAF cleaner, funnels, an air pump that works off cigarette lighter.

If you drive through a lot of rural areas it may be a good idea to keep a blanket, some drinking water and a few non perishable snacks like granola bars or energy bars just in case you get stranded for a long period of time. I also like to keep a disposable cover all's and gloves in the trunk too so I can stay clean if repairs are needed.

The AAA Kit is a first class roadside emergency kit.
The AAA Emergency Road Kit is a great addition to any car's trunk - especially a new teen driver's trunk.
The AAA kit weighs about 5 pounds and even has velcro on the bottom so that it won't slide around in the trunk. It's tough and extremely durable.

 • 8 gauge jumper cables (10 feet)
 • Flashlight - 2 x AA batteries included
 • Bungee cord - 12"
 • Screwdriver - 2 in 1
 • Shop towel
 • Duct Tape
 • Rain Poncho
 • Cable Ties
 • Wash up towels
 • 45 piece emergency road first aid kit (includes band aids, gauze, and an insect bite antiseptic)
 • AAA Emergency Car Care Guide
Drive with the peace of mind and confidence that comes with the AAA brand and the AAA roadside emergency kit.

The contents of the 63-piece emergency car kit.
Why buy the AAA kit over other car emergency kits?

 • Unlike other roadside emergency kits, the AAA kit has the backing of AAA, the recognized leader in car safety and roadside assistance.
 • While most emergency road kits include a first aid kit, the AAA kit gives you the heavy equipment (like jumper cables) that many others leave out.
 • The AAA roadside emergency kit is small enough that you won't be tempted to toss it out to free up more room in your trunk.
 • A bright red carrying case enables you to locate your car emergency kit quickly and easily.
