Ouch, I think I just got dated by 2000_black_ss! LOL.
This website will explain all: http://www.sportplanet.com/tsb/
Tecmo SuperBowl is a Nintendo game that came out in 1989 and is arguably one of the best football games ever. Extreamly easy controls, good graphics for the time, very competitve, an incredible following and some completely unbelievable plays - some could easily be blocked while others were pure knowledge of the game. Here is an example of a play someone did just to show off the mad running skillz of Bo Jackson and what some decent skill can do. BTW - Bo Jackson simply is this good in the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAAgfY_NHzw
There is a HUGE nostolgia effect as well for playing your favorite football hero's of the time. I would say anyone that was born between 1965 and 1980 and played this game will put it on their top 10 list of greatest games played. Yeah, it was that cool.
I also just noticed you were born when this game first came out so that would be the reason. From what I hear Madden 2007 is going to be the closest thing to compare it with. The differance is that football games didn't really exist before this, sure there were a few games, like the original Tecmo Bowl, but this is just an incredible jump there is no comparison. It would be like having a 1200hp street legal Monte. Just that cool.
Another big fondness for alot of people was that anyone could play the game and it broke some of the typical social barriers. You went to college either a jock or geek, and it didn't matter - whoever was the best at SuperBowl had the largest Johnson and was the Alpha Male. The geek still wouldn't get laid, but did get alot more respect in the hall.

Amazingly I cannot remember the center defensive lineman for the Houston Oilers.I saw that guys name come up more often than anything in one game. My best friend held me to -80 some yards in the first half. His move involved: Play start, take one step down, dive. Always ended up in a sack and I didn't have any shotgun plays so there was no way to play. He even decided it wasn't any fun and played someone else. I caught up a bit, but I think he let me cause I was pissed.
