ok folks now you all have me curious. and the photo if it post should give ya a good idea to why.
But i recently got a 86 chevy 4x4 truck. for 400.00 and it has become the new project for me.
so that i can leave the monte carlo alone.

Also have a few questions on the 350/305 swap.
how can you tell the diffrence between them? I have the vin on th etruck and it says it should have a 305 in it. But the valve cover says 350 on it.
But i know that they have a ton of interchangeabel parts on them and for as long as i have been around them both i havent been abel to tell them apart by looking at them so i run the numbers. but havent done it on this thing yet. So any clues on this would be nice also.

but honestly i would take either right now to make it run right LOL

Sorry Mickey, just about everything on a 305 will bolt up to a 350 so just looking at it wont do much good the only way to tell for sure is the # on the block.

pretty much all small block are identical on the out side so block number behind the head is the only way to tell really what it is
and if memory serves me right i think if you take a small block from the same time it will al be the same bolt patern but if you start changing era's you will have to change stuff
because of the diffrent rear seals the crank and flywheel is diffrent but that is no prob easy to get around

ok so it is not just me thinking i was crazy LOL

but this is suposed to be the 350 and actually looks like it might be a target motor.

also need ot change the rear main on it i think it has a oil leak but havent pin pointed it yet. I do how ever know it is not the valve covers for once LOL

but it is twords the back of the motor by the tranny so im thinking rear main or oil pan or both.
might jus tmake a weekend out of it and do the lower end on this thing so i know it is good to go for them and then do the top end later. at least it will ahve good gaskets in it. till i decid to go nuts and rebuild it etc...

yeah it would be a good idea to change the rear seal and pan gasket get one of the one pice ruber with the crush rings in them and not the cheap cork one you will be happy with them now the rear seal you will have to back the trans (fun fun ) and did you check the gacket around your dis. shaft ? and the oil pressure sender ? they leak from time to time

We changed the 305 in my '79 truck out with a 350. Everythingfit the except for one thing, and I can not remember what it was, that was about 10 years ago. If hubby was home, he'd probably remember, but he went deer and duck hunting this weekend.

The 81 truck I have that went from a 305 to 350 had several different things that didn't work.

Dip stick tube wrong location

Oil Pan Different

Flywheel wrong tooth pattern

My problem was that I bought a 350 4 bolt block, main caps, crank, rods and heads. I planned on using the parts off of my 305 to finish the motor. After scratching my head a few times and a couple of trips to the wrecking yard and auto parts store I was cruising down the hwy! I spent close to $2,200.00 on the project opting for some performance gear etc. If I were to do it all over again I would buy a performance crate motor. But had I done this I would have never had the satisfation of building engine #4.

this is already in the truck running and driving.
Just need to check this oil leak out,
as far as the dist. gasket i never even thought to look at it or the sending unit. this thing hasfactory guages so it is a good possiablity.

I was looking from the bottom to the top and the tranny pan is wet. and the back of the motor. I figure i will find it and fix it so i can park it with out it leaving a spot. not to mention with the price of oil etc. i dont need to have a truck you have to put in 4QT. everytime you take it around the block.
