2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S vs 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT

By Eric Weiner
Dec 19, 2013

In another battle of the Brits, Motor Trend's Carlos Lago pits two of England’s finest high-performance luxury coupes against one another in this week’s episode of Head 2 Head. The 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT and 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S have a lot in common, aside from being assembled a mere 37 miles apart, and take to road and track to settle the score.

Both the 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT and 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S are high-performance variants of high-end coupes from brands traditionally known for their refinement and elegance. Lagos points out that both cars share carbon ceramic brakes, adjustable dampers, and Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires as part of a similarly-priced and similarly-powered package.

The 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT has a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine directing 550 hp and 503 lb-ft of torque through Jaguar’s six-speed automatic transmission, and can be had for $174,895. Putting up similar figures is the 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, which makes 565 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque from its 5.9-liter V12. The Vantage uses a seven-speed single-clutch automatic transmission, and starts at $187,820.

As Lagos finds that the cars perform nearly neck-and-neck in terms of braking, figure eight, and drag tests, the differences start to unfold out on the road and on the track. The 2014 Jaguar XKR-S GT is slightly less decadent on the inside, with the primary sensation being the wild, brutal, growl that thrashes out of the supercharged V-8. While the 2015 Aston Martin V12 Vantage S was “more of an occasion” for Lagos to sit in, he conceded that the Jaguar was in fact easier to maneuver and manage at speed around the track.

It’s fantastic to see these two carbon-fiber-clad missiles side by side, where the Aston and the Jaguar look like close cousins. Underneath all of the aerodynamics and intakes, the overall shape between the two is definitely similar, both evoking the short rear and long hood that showcase their British-sports-car heritage.

Check out the full video below to experience the in-depth comparison, and let us know in the comments which you think comes out on top.

Report: 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Priced at $45,595, 2015 Suburban Costs $48,295 > WoW > Expensive 4>Sure I can buy a home 4 that amount of $'s...

Dec 19, 2013 * It is just 'bout big enough to live 'in (LOL)

The redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2015 Chevrolet Suburban will be priced slightly higher than their predecessors, starting at $45,595 for the Tahoe and $48,295, both including destination. These numbers come from Automotive News, which has received dealer pricing guides for these new SUVs. GM has not yet publicly announced pricing figures.

Both prices represent significant increases over 2014 Tahoe and Suburban models, as the base price goes up $1000 for the base two-wheel-drive LS models on both SUVs for 2015. Higher trim levels for the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban include LT and LTZ; AN says a four-wheel-drive Tahoe LT will cost $53,995 with destination ($2510 higher than last year) and a four-wheel-drive Tahoe LTZ will start at $62,995, up $2640 from 2014. For the Suburban, prices go up even more, with a $3440 jump to the four-wheel-drive LT to $56,995 and a $3300 jump to the four-wheel-drive LTZ to a lofty $65,595.
We don’t yet have full option pricing for the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, but we do know that both SUVs will be powered by a 5.3-liter, direct-injection V-8 engine with 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. Both SUVs also gain numerous available safety technologies for 2015, like a collision warning system, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking assist, and lane departure warning.
The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2015 Chevrolet Suburban will go on sale in the first quarter of 2014, alongside their corporate siblings, the 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Look for more details on pricing for these redesigned GM full-size SUVs to come early next year.

Subaru Chief Rejects Idea of BRZ, FR-S Convertibles < 2 of these or a New StingRay ?< > I like the BRZ & FR-S because they are a driver's ride > Not good for just interstate or city driving, but for country roads....
I'd still choose a New 'Vette then have 2 of the below...Really > I want'em 'all (LOL)

All may not be at ease in Toyobaru-land, with Subaru brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga dismissing the notion of a drop-top Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S in an interview with Automotive News. The discussion took place at the 2013 Tokyo auto show, at which Toyota displayed yet another FR-S/GT86 convertible concept following the initial debut of the FT-86 Open concept (pictured above) at the 2013 Geneva auto show.
"I understand well that Toyota is receiving strong requests from the American market for the car," Yoshinaga told Automotive News. "But the biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards. There are big technical difficulties."
Recent reports from Subaru and Toyota have said about as much, citing various engineering obstacles that make the development of a convertible BRZ/FR-S too costly. Subaru, which builds both versions of the vehicle at its Gumma, Japan factory, has indicated that a convertible variant would require stretching the wheelbase to provide enough back-seat room; Toyota previously specified hurdles such as extra bracing would be needed to maintain rigidity and tautness.
"We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen," Yoshinaga told AN, rejecting the idea of the project for either automaker. "Our engineering department told me that losing the entire roof requires a complete redesign of the structure. It would need a big change."
Such an adamant refusal thickens this back-and-forth plot, and it could potentially signify creative discord between the two Japanese automakers.
If recent rumors prove true, it would mean Toyota is not completely averse to an engineering overhaul, after all — in addition to reports that Toyota is considering more powerful engine options to replace the 200-hp boxer, our colleagues at Motor Trend report that a Scion FR-S sedan has been green-lit and could arrive as soon as 2015. The car could make its initial debut as early as the 2014 Geneva auto show in March.
A sedan variant of the Scion FR-S would reportedly require engineering a 3.9-inch longer wheelbase to accommodate a hybrid powertrain, which is inconsistent with Subaru’s claims that it wouldn't manufacture another version of the sports coupe. Stay tuned for more news on the status of future FR-S/BRZ variants, and we’ll be sure to update as the story continues to develop.
