Dangers of Aggressive Driving
YVazquez
There have always been aggressive drivers like `Space on our roads, but back when you only saw another car every couple of miles, it really wasn't a problem. But combine today's crowded highways, big powerful vehicles, and angry, stressed-out drivers, and you have a hot safety issue. So what are the police doing to cool it down? AutoWorld reporter Y. Vazquez hit the road to find out.
It doesn't take long to spot an aggressive driver. We see them on the roads everyday, the frequent lane changer, the tailgater, the red light runner, the road racer.
ROBERTA REYNOLDS, MOTORIST: "They can't even break their speed, when they're speeding like that and sometimes they'll merge out of another lane and they just vroom right across you."
Bold brash behavior that sometimes jeopardizes the safety of other motorists---and if pushed to the limit can be the primary cause of crashes, injuries and highway fatalities.
MARK LIBERTO, MOTORIST: "It's better to get there slowly than to drive crazy and not get there at all."
Law enforcement agencies in Maryland, Northern Virginia, Washington, DC and parts of Pennsylvania are working together to reduce aggressive driving through a comprehensive program called Smooth Operator. The public safety initiative uses radio spots.
RADIO SPOT: "I am an aggressive driver. I'm a son, a mother, a sports fan, teacher, lawyer . . ."
And clever TV ads to educate motorists about the risks involved with aggressive driving.
TV AD: "You wouldn't act like this at work, why would you drive like it. Aggressive driving is contagious. Catch it and you're caught!"
The public education campaign is designed to coincide with law enforcement waves out on the roadways.
Trooper first class Samuel Irby of the Maryland State Police says speeding is the most prevalent example of aggressive driving. He sets up a laser alongside the road, and within minutes, Irby registers several cars driving above the posted speed limit.
To get a true sense of the everyday activity out on the roads, Irby takes us on a ride-along in an unmarked Crown Victoria.
TFC. SAMUEL IRBY, MARYLAND STATE POLICE: "I can get a better observation of vehicles committing violations in an unmarked car."
As we cruise the capital beltway, Irby eyes a silver Jetta doing 90 miles per hour while weaving in an out of the traffic erratically. After he pulls the car over, Irby discovers the driver has several points on her license from previous moving violations
IRBY: "More than likely her license will be suspended and for some people that's what it takes---their privileges in Maryland to be suspended in order for them to learn that reckless driving on the highway is just not going to be tolerated."
Since the Smooth Operator program began in 1997, more than 1.5 million citations have been handed out to aggressive drivers
JOHN KUO, ADMINISTRATOR, MARYLAND MOTOR VEHICLE ADMINISTRATION: "If you are issued a traffic citation citing you with aggressive driving, that is a misdemeanor, you immediately get 5 points posted to your driver's license."
Administrator John Kuo says the MVA is taking a hard stance on aggressive drivers in an effort to keep the motoring public out of harms way.
KUO: "We are a safety organization. What is the MVA charged with? Our mission is to make sure that a driver is safe to operate behind a wheel before we license that driver."
[b]Keeping motorists safe on the roads is a challenging task given the harried world we live in, our pent-u

WHO NEEDS STINKIN' ROADS ANYWAYS!!!

Segway's Boring. Bring On The Hovercraft
Arik Hesseldahl, 12.05.01, 10:00 AM ET

NEW YORK -

Zap's Airboard: Why roll when you can hover?
Dean Kamen certainly knew how to build up the hype about his Segway scooter. He kept it a secret, but let the world know that he was keeping a secret. Curiosity makes for good press; but in the end, all he did was reinvent the wheel.

But wheels have been around for thousands of years and there's essentially nothing new about them. They just roll along until something stops them. How cool is that? The 21st century isn't supposed to be about wheels. Did The Jetsons get around in futuristic cars with wheels? No, they flew around in jet-powered cars, leaving wheels with The Flintstones in the stone age.

To be truly cool, Segway should have been a scooter that hovers. Sounds unrealistic? Tell that to the folks at Zap (nasdaq: ZAPP - news - people ). The company that sells electric scooters and bicycles has just landed a deal for North American distribution rights to a personal hovercraft called the Airboard. And unlike the Segway, you can buy one right now if you have the money.

Running on a four-stroke engine, the saucer-shaped vehicle looks like something out of a Japanese science-fiction cartoon. The rider stands on it and leans this way and that to control the direction. It hovers at a height of three to four inches off the ground, with a top speed of 15 miles per hour.

Millenium's SoloTrek: Ginger who?
When asked if the product was a gag, company spokesman Alex Campbell said it's available for test drives at the firm's Sebastopol, Calif. headquarters. And Campbell reaffirmed that, again unlike Segway, the Airboard is available for sale right now; prices range from $9,500 to $12,000.

If a few inches aren't cool enough, then consider the SoloTrek XFV, a vehicle under development by Millenium Jet of Sunnyvale, Calif. The company has a $5 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop a personal vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) vehicle that would be used for military and law-enforcement purposes. The company is currently testing a working prototype in short flights, in which the craft is tethered to a crane; it has only flown about three feet off the ground as yet.

The personal VTOL is still a few years away from being manufactured in quantity, and the first client will likely be the Department of Defense, which hopes to take delivery of the first units in late 2003. But when finished, the company says the craft would weigh 325 pounds, fly at a speed of 70 knots or about 80 miles per hour, with a range of roughly 120 nautical miles using 15 gallons of fuel.

Specific applications might include light assault missions for the military or search-and-rescue operations for military and law-enforcement agencies. (Film buffs might remember a similar concept of personal aircraft from the chase scene in Francois Truffaut's 1966 film adaptation of the Ray Bradbury novel Fahrenheit 451.) Once mass-production happens, consumers may be able to buy one for about the same price as a high-end sports car, the company says.

By that time, will anyone still remember, let alone care, what all the hype about Segway/Ginger/It was about?

What is Road Rage?
Road rage is defined as "an assault with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger(s) or `SpaceRiderof another motor vehicle or an assault precipitated by an incident that occurred on a roadway." In order for an incident to be defined as road rage, there must be "willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others." In other words, road rage means that someone deliberately tried to harm you as a result of something that happened while you were driving your car. They note that "persons who are characteristically cynics, rude, angry or aggressive are prone to get angry [on the highway] more often." Impatient "type A" personalities may also be more likely to express their rage on the highway. The Iowa site lists the following Common Motorist Irritants: [ul][*]Tailgating to pressure a driver to go faster or get out of the way. [*]Flashing lights in order to signal persons to move to another lane. [*]Obscene gesturing. [*]Changing lanes without signaling. [*]Blasting the horn. [*]Frequently changing lanes by weaving back and forth. [*]Racing to beat a yellow light that's about to turn red. [*]Traveling in the passing or left lane at a slower speed, making it impossible for others to pass. [*]Driving with the high beams on behind another vehicle or toward oncoming traffic. [*]Cutting people off. [*]Slowing down after passing someone. [*]Not making a right turn in the right-hand turn lane. [*]Not reacting quickly after the red light turns green. [/ul]One of the bests way to avoid becoming a victim of a "road rage" driver is to consciously avoid responding in kind. Remember that what may appear to be harassment may be simply a mistake in driving. One study found that a large percentage of drivers reported having been tailgated, but only a very much small number admitted to having tailgated others. If the other driver's aggressive behavior is intentional, the best thing to do is to avoid eye contact and get out of the way. Don't allow driving to become a competition.
What is Aggressive Driving?
Aggressive driving is defined as a progression of unlawful driving actions such as: speeding, improper or excessive lane changing, failing to signal intent, failing to see that movement can be made safely, or, improper passing (such as using an emergency lane to pass, or passing on the shoulder). Aggressive drivers know that you don't know who they are, so they feel like they have more power and can do as they please. They don't believe there will be consequences to their actions.
Signs of Aggressive Driving
You may not even be aware of it, but if some of the following items sound like you when you drive, you are probably an aggressive driver:
[ul][*]Expressing frustration, cursing, yelling, gesturing to other drivers. [*]Not paying attention. Eating, drinking, talking on the phone, reading while driving.
