shift interlock solenoid

Default shift interlock solenoid

I have a 98 chev monte carlo, automatic, shifter in middle, when i go to move my car, the button on the shifter will not push in, I desparately need help cannot afford a shop to fix it, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance Sharon

Under your shifter console there is a solenoid that is sticking. You can either replace the solenoid or unplug it. Unplugging it will make it so you don't have to hit the brakes to take it out of gear I believe. As long as you don't get stupid with it, you won't have any problems.

thank you for the help, i am a disabled 60 yr old lady with only one son who is not mechanically inclined that together we are going to try to do what everyone suggests, i just dont have the money to put the blasted thing in the shop, i am the second owner of the car and it is my baby, red, of course. thanks again. sharon

It's not hard to do, even if you're not mechanically inclined. Just get a knife/flathead screwdriver. Put the car in neutral, pry out the clip on the back of the shifter handle. Pull the handle off. Then use the flathead screwdriver to pop off the shifter cover. If you need any help let me know, especially if you're around southeast VA/northeast NC I could do it for you

thank you, my son read your posting and popped the shift **** right off, my problem apparently is in the **** itself, the parts inside are busted up not allowing the button to be pushed in, thank you all very much from Oklahoma.
